“It doesn’t get much better than this,” was Finn World Masters President Andy Denison’s comment at the end of the day.
Nearly 300 Finns enjoying sublime sailing in 30 degrees, 8-12 knots, launching from a gorgeous beach is about as good as it gets, and though the racing was challenging, it was a spectacular day to remember, with Finns filling the Gulf of Follonica from one side to the other.
The fleet was divided into 4 groups, which sailed 2 races each, on two different areas: the Yellow and Blue groups sailed in the North Alpha Course and the Red and Green groups competed in the South Bravo Course.
All eight groups races were won by different boats, setting up what looks like a fascinating championship.
On the North Alpha Field, victories went to:
- Andre Budzien, three-time champion
- Enrico Passoni
- John Greenwood, two-time champion
- Rudolf Lidarik
On the bravo South Course, despite a more unstable wind that caused one race to be canceled and delayed, the winners were:
- Nanno Schuttrups
- Laurent Hay
- Akos Lukats
- Nick Craig
While on the water the intense Finn World Masters competitions were taking place, on land the companions enjoyed an equally fascinating experience. The ladies spent a wonderful day visiting Morisfarms, a renowned Tuscan winery and partner of the event. Here they had the opportunity to taste fine wines and typical products of the region. Surrounded by the breathtaking views of the Maremma hills, they savored the authentic flavors of Tuscany amidst chatter and relaxation.
The day for all ended beautifully with the soothing sound of the waves and the warmth of the waning sun when, as the Finns returned to the beach, we all gathered together for a sunset happy hour at the beach bar.
Two more races await us today, with a day that promises to be even warmer, with full sunshine and southerly winds of 6-7 knots, promising more excitement for sailors and spectators.
