Twenty-one crews, nine races, and an overall victory for the Czech duo Procházka and Čáp in the Gulf of Follonica.
Nine races were scheduled, and all nine were completed, despite less-than-encouraging forecasts and wind conditions that, for three days, required patience, adaptability, and a tremendous effort from the organizers out at sea. The 2026 Italian Fireball Championship, organized by the Centro Velico Punta Ala A.S.D. on behalf of the Italian Sailing Federation, concluded on a decidedly positive note.
Luca Stefanini and Stefano Borzani of Fraglia Vela Desenzano claimed the Italian title, confidently leading the national standings and finishing with a comfortable lead over the other Italian crews. The competition for the top overall positions was fueled primarily by the strong international turnout: seven foreign crews out of twenty-one, hailing from France, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, and Germany.
The overall victory went to the Czech duo of Filip Procházka and Milan Čáp, who delivered a very solid performance. Behind them, the battle for second and third place remained open until the very last race: Stefanini and Borzani ultimately secured second place ahead of the Swiss team of Christina Haerdi-Landerer and Cedric Landerer. This international podium confirms the technical caliber and appeal of the Punta Ala event. The fleet also included two wooden Fireball Classic boats and an Under-25 crew, showcasing the diverse facets of a class with a long history. The presence of female sailors was also significant, encouraged by a format that allows men and women to compete together on equal terms, resulting in numerous mixed crews.
After a first day marked by a sudden drop in wind speed and ending with only one race completed, conditions gradually improved over the next two days. Increasing breezes, reaching up to 12 knots, provided two intense days of sailing: four races on Saturday and another four on Sunday, with racing continuing until 5:00 p.m. This made it possible to catch up on the schedule and complete all nine scheduled races.
The frequent shifts in wind direction required a particularly intense organizational effort. The support staff stepped in several times to reposition the race course and ensure the races proceeded smoothly, working quickly and efficiently until late in the afternoon. This dedication was recognized and appreciated by the entire fleet at the end of the event.
For three days, starts, crossings, and buoy roundings brought the stretch of water in front of the PuntAla Camp & Resort beach to life, turning the Championship into a spectacle that could also be seen from shore. The sails of the Fireballs colored the horizon against the backdrop of the island of Elba and the Tuscan Archipelago, offering guests and their companions a prime vantage point.
The Championship took place on sunny, cool days—ideal for enjoying the Tuscan Maremma. The quality of the services at PuntAla Camp & Resort and the proximity of the boat park, race office, beach, and accommodations made the experience particularly easy and enjoyable for crews, families, and staff alike.
The Fireball Class’s character also contributed to the event’s success: a competitive fleet on the water—elegant and sportsmanlike—capable of fostering an atmosphere of fair play, mutual respect, and positivity even on shore. This atmosphere permeated the entire weekend and turned the closing farewell into a promise made by the sailors themselves: to reunite in Punta Ala in two years.
This farewell is the greatest recognition for the Punta Ala Sailing Center and for everyone who contributed to the Championship’s success.
Meanwhile, for the Punta Ala Sailing Center, it’s already time to get back to business: from September 17 to 20, the waters of the Gulf of Follonica will host the Italian F18 Class Championship, promising another weekend of top-notch Italian sailing off the beach at the PuntAla Camp & Resort.
