Safety in Regattas: A Guide to Avoiding Collisions in Large Fleets

In preparation for the A-Class Catamaran World Championships 2024, an important safety document has been compiled by a dedicated working group of A-Cat sailors: Christian Stock, Dominik Peikert, Matthias Dietz (+), and Rainer Bohrer.
This document offers insights and advice on how to prevent and avoid high-risk collision situations by sailing with awareness and caution. Considering the extremely high speeds reached by both A-Cat Open foiling and Classic boats, we urge all participants to carefully read this guide to ensure a safe and stress-free experience during the regattas. With closing speeds between boats that can exceed 50 knots (up to 100 km/h), it is crucial that every sailor is well-prepared and thoroughly familiar with the rules to avoid collisions, especially in situations with many boats on the racecourse. The importance of adhering to Rule 14 of the Racing Rules of Sailing, “Avoid Contact,” cannot be overstated in a class as fast-paced as the A-Cat.
